on the way home we stopped in santa barbara and surfed the point at ledbetter beach. 2′ to 4′ and howling off shore. surfed my 6′8″ zippifish quad. on my last wave in, i pulled out a little too late and caught some of the flat-rock bottom. kinda bummed me out cuz these speed dialer fins are close to $100 a set. the lockbox got damaged as well. guess ill be seeing the guys at the little house of repair next week…
today we stopped in santa rosa to gas up posy. while we were there, we saw signs that guided us to the Charles M. Schulz Museum.
talk about taking me back to my childhood! so much to see and do. we learned everything there was to learn about this incredible cartoonist, and the impact he made internationally with his simple yet powerful little cartoons.

today simone, my brother david’s wife, gave birth to a baby girl!
this morning we were driving the 3 hour trek over the shasta mountain range from chico to humboldt county when a little chipmunk ran across the rode, safely to the other side.
about 10 minutes later my phone beeped to let me know i had a message. when i checked the message, i heard my brother david tell me that the baby was born and that simone was fine. at the end of the message, david referred to the new baby girl as a “little chipmunk”.
i still dont know the name of my new baby niece, but i have a feeling im gonna refer to her as “little chipmunk” for a while…
first of all, Happy Easter and Passover to everyone!
yesterday, we performed for the Cameo Professional Auxiliary of Long Beach, “A Walk on the Wild Side”, at the Long Beach Convention Center. from what i understand, it is an annual fashion show/silent auction that raises money for the Long Beach Unified School District. there were about 1200 people in attendance. we played in the lobby as people arrived, and created a little mood music before the fashion show. below are some random photos of the event:
we often end up amongst the wild animals, playing our wild music.
lots of stuff up for auction.
gabe on kit.
i really get into it when i play.
chris. so true.
i spent today in chico.
tomorrow i go to arcata, which is in humboldt county.

i know i won’t be able to surf tomorrow, as i have a gig in the morning and then i am driving up to humboldt county afterwards……..more to follow over the next few days…
im gonna post each time i surf, just so i can have a record of my surfing life. i know its a bit boring to some, but thats my life. for me, surfing is one of the most important aspects of my life. it gives me clarity. it keeps my balanced. all i want to do is surf as much as i can…

Samuel Enriquez Suque
June 13, 1935~March 24, 2007
today i attended the funeral of Samuel Enriquez Suque. “Mr. Suque” is the father of my very good friend Nathan Suque. Nathan and i grew up in the same hood, and were pretty much best friends from grade school till now.
when we were teenagers, running around and getting into all kinds of stuff……good, and not so good, Mr. Suque quickly established himself as someone to NOT mess with. he was a bad-ass. father of seven children, time spent as an officer in the air-force, Mr. Suque didnt take any shit from us know-it-all teenage boys. he kept us in line. at a time when we were young boyz, constantly testing the limits of everything around us, Mr. Suque let us know very clearly where we stood. he was stern…….and looking back at it now, i needed it.
as i got older, i would see Mr. Suque from time to time. he was straight forward. he would always check in with my life, and ask me very direct questions. “are you in college? are you getting good grades, or are you wasting your time? are you learning how to become independent?” these were the types of questions he would ask me, and i would answer as best i could.
i remember one time, about 15 years ago, i stopped by the house to say hello. Mr. Suque asked me how i was doing, where i was working, etc. i answered his questions and waited for his response. he looked me dead in the eye and said, “you have everything here…….opportunity, an economy, education. don’t waste it! your father and mother have worked very hard to give you this life. don’t disrespect your parents.” and with that, he turned around and walked away.
im 40 years young now. and in a time of “everyone gets a trophy”, “dont say ‘no’ to little johnny because we dont want to break his spirit”, and other line-blurring nonsense i witness every day in this modern life of ours, i feel very grateful and humbled to have known Mr. Suque. he was the real deal. island style. came to this country with nothing, and provided for his family through hard work and determination.
i am proud to have known him.
thankful to have feared him.
humbled to have been at the receiving end of his “tuff-luv”.
rest in peace, Mr. Suque…
